Casual Family Sessions

It doesn't matter the size of your family or extended family, we can make it work while having fun!

Families are requesting more casual looking photos these days instead of the formal portraits. I love doing it just before sunset when the light is beautiful and soft. You can suggest the venue depending on what look you're going with, there are so many to choose from. Some venues also charge a fee, so keep that in mind when discussing where to take the pictures.

What to wear?

Try co-ordinate colours, but don’t be too ‘matchy-matchy’. Long gone are the days of blue jeans and white shirts for everyone. Rather, try to pick a few colours and mix and match clothes to fit the theme

Dress for the shoot location. If we are shooting at an outdoor location such as a garden or forest, then keep it casual and relaxed with jeans, shorts or dresses. Similarly, if we are shooting inside a formal location then jazz it up a notch – you don’t want to look out of place in your surroundings – so try pick outfits that work with where we are doing the session

Please avoid slogans, character clothes and brand names. These can all be pretty distracting and most photographers will end up editing out logos and brand names anyway!

Try and avoid all white, all black and overly neon/bright colours such as the red of fuschia. Especially if you’re shooting in a garden environment – these bright colours can make you look as if you are floating and can appear quite aggressive in the images.

Lastly – keep in mind the season. In spring or summer shades of pinks, creams and blush tones works well. In Winter and autumn navy blues, beige/browns and greys look lovely.

Other Tips and Tricks

Not all photos will be posed. Most of the time I simply enjoy watching everyone interact in a relaxed and fun environment. It’s not all about looking at the camera and saying cheese. The more you relax and have fun, the better the outcome of the images.

Special Note

The best time to do an outdoor family session is before sunset when the lighting is perfectly soft and has that lovely golden glow. Family sessions are scheduled 1-2 hours before sunset. Typical summer sessions start around 17h30-17h45, winter sessions start at 16h00 – 17h30, so I always recommend late lunches, naps, dinners, etc. to ensure happy kiddos for your session.

I’m looking forward to spending some time with you & your family!
